Abstract

448,240. Coal - mining. SULLIVAN MACHINERY CO., 400, North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Dec. 3, 1934, No. 34684. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1933. [Classes 9 (i) and 68 (i)] A coal-cutting machine comprises a boom pivoted to a base for movement about horizontal and upright axes and having a rotatable front part carrying a pivoted kerf cutter, means for swinging the boom about the horizontal axis and simultaneously swinging the kerf cutter to adjust the latter for making parallel horizontal cuts, and means for swinging the boom about the upright axis and simultaneously swinging the kerf cutter to adjust the latter for making parallel vertical cuts. General arrangement.-The machine comprises a truck 1 supporting a turntable 21 rotatable by hydraulic rams 29 acting through anchored cables 47 ; the turntable has a rear motor platform 165, and an anchoring hydraulic jack 273 and supports the pivoted boom with rotatable front part 97 carrying a transverse pivot supporting a frame 114 carrying the jib 124 about which moves an endless chain saw formed of links each with a single tooth. Teeth of a double sprocket engage the spaces between alternate teeth. The jib 124 is pivotally adjustable and is held in adjusted position by a band brake 128, Fig. 32, actuated by crank 146 and rocking lever 138. Pivoted hydraulic, rams 60, Figs. 1 and 6, move the boom 97 in a vertical plane while hydraulic rams 80 act through cable 95 and drum 96 to rotate the boom; latch 101 then locks the boom. A hydraulic ram 105 rocks the jib supporting frame 114. Driving-arrangements.-The motor 166, Fig. 3, with an automatic starter 167 controlled by a push button &c., drives a shaft 169 which, through gears 172, 173, and disc clutch 174, Fig. 20, or gear 197, idler, gear 203 and disc clutch 177 may drive a shaft 175 in either direction. Shaft 175 may drive an aligned shaft 208 at low speed through gears 209, 210, 223, 224, gear 224 being slidable and connected to internal gear 224a adapted to engage pinion 216 to give a direct high speed drive to shaft 208. From shaft 208, bevel gears 230, 233, shaft 234 and further bevels, transverse shaft 10, Fig. 1, is driven and drives the truck axles through chains 7. Bevel gear 246, Fig. 20, also meshes with bevel gear 233 and is connected to the drum 248 of an internal band brake which controls movement of the truck. Shaft 169 also drives through chain 343, Fig. 3, an hydraulic pump of gear-wheel type while the forward end of the shaft, through pinion 283, Fig. 29, slidable gear 284, universal joint 299 and sleeve 300 drives a splined shaft 301 extending through the boom and enclosed in tubes. The forward end of shaft 301 drives the chain saw through gearing 317, 318, 320, 321, 329, 334, 335, Fig. 30. Breaking-down.-A breaker comprising an envelope 457, Fig. 41, of rubber &c. has its ends closed by bolted straps 459 and is reinforced by strips 461. Inner and outer members 467, 466, bolted together, provide for attachment of a rigid fluid-supply pipe 463 with handle 468. Fluid-supply.-A reversing valve 403, Fig. 37, controls the supply to a distributing box 368, Fig. 3, and comprises a rotary body with annular passages 411, 413, communicating with longitudinal passages 415, 417, adapted to be placed alternatively into communication with the pump intake and discharge passages 419, 420. A similar valve controls supply and dis. charge from the breaking-down device which has a separate supply tank and the two valves are controlled by interlocking handles 405, 406, Fig. 3, with cut-away parts on their hubs allowing opening of either valve only when the other is closed. The distributing box 368 contains valves 441, 444, 447, 450, similar to the valve 403 and controlling the supply to the various hydraulic rams other than the anchoring ram which takes its supply from a branch 265. Methods of mining with the machine are also described.
