Abstract
In the recovery of aluminium compounds from aluminiferous materials such as waste products from hard coal mines or coal preparing and washing plants, bauxite with high silica content, or kaolin, the material is treated with hydrochloric acid at say 160--225 DEG C., under pressure, the product filtered to remove silica, the filtrate evaporated and heated, say to 200--250 DEG C., to drive off hydrochloric acid which is collected for re-use, the residue boiled with a solution of alkali or ammonium carbonate or phosphate to decompose any remaining chloride, and the insoluble residue treated with caustic alkali to extract the aluminium as aluminate, from which alumina may be obtained by known means. The filtrate from the last mentioned residue, comprising a common salt solution is concentrated, neutralized if necessary with hydrochloric acid, and electrolyzed to obtain hydrogen and chlorine which are combined to give hydrochloric acid for re-use. Raw material for the process may be obtained by burning coal with a high ash content.
