Abstract

[Class 78 (i)] In the delivery of cork-tipped cigarettes or cigarettes with printed matter from machines of the continuous-rod type, successive cigarettes cut from the rod' have the tips &c. pointing in opposite directions. In order to arrange the cigarettes for packing &c. it is necessary that all similar ends of the cigarettes lie in the same direction, and the invention provides means for reversing the cigarettes of one order on the conveyer, so that all cigarettes shall be delivered lying the same way. As shown, tipped cigarettes 1 are brought from the cut-off mechanism of a rod machine by a conveyer 2, and alternate cigarettes are fed on to a continuously moving conveyer 4 by deflectors 3 in two rows, axially transverse to the movement of the conveyer and slightly spaced apart, the tips in the row C being oppositely disposed to those in the row D. A device 5 is arranged above the conveyer to reverse the cigarettes in the row C. The device comprises four suction heads 6 at right angles to each other, capable of rotary movement. In the position shown in Fig. 2, a group of cigarettes in the row C has collected against a lip 11<a> on the underside of the suction head. At this moment a valve 12 is rotated to connect the suction to the right hand head, causing it to pick up the batch of cigarettes thereunder, and to disconnect the left hand head, which drops a reversed batch again on the conveyer. The valve 12 is operated from a cam 14 by links 15, 16 and the intermittent rotation of the heads is effected by the engagement of a pin 11 on a crank 9 with slots on a spider 7 arranged above the heads. In a modified form, Fig. 4, the head 5 is continuously rotated by an elongated pinion 20 engaging a gear 21 and is raised and lowered at the appropriate times by a cam 22 and rollers 24. The cigarettes are collected by a stop 27 on a dividing rib 18.
