Abstract
447,562. Controlling shock-absorbers. ALVIS CAR & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-, Holyhead Road, Coventry. Feb. 26, 1935, No. 6122. [Class 108 (iii)] In a motor-vehicle shock-absorber of the solid friction type having an adjustment arm adapted to be controlled by means of a device which is operated in accordance with the speed of the vehicle, manual means are provided for modifying the effect of the speed-responsive device. As described, the arms of four shockabsorbers are connected for example by rods, cables, levers and cranks, or Bowden mechanisms to a cable 22 connected to the automatic control 23. In one form, Fig. 1, the automatic control comprises an oil-pump 25 driven from the gear box and forcing oil against a spring-pressed piston 26 pivoted to one end of a double-arm lever 22<a> connected at its other end to the cable 22, while the manual control comprises a spring-pressed cone valve 28 connected to an operating knob 29. The valve 28 may serve as an automatic release for the pump pressure or an independent release valve may be fitted. In another form Fig. 3, dished plates 31, 32 are axially fixed and slidable respectively on the lay shaft 36 and separated by balls 33 which, under centrifugal action, press the plate 32 outwardly against the action of a spring 34, the plate being connected by a forked member 37 with a slide 38 connected to the cable 22 which adjusts the shock-absorbers. Manual control is effected by a double-arm lever 40 which is adapted to move a rod 41 to which is secured by a forked member 42 the slidable abutment 35 of the spring 34.
