Abstract
447,264. Cash registers. BURROUGHS ADDING MACHINE CO., 6071, 2nd Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Sept. 14, 1934, No. 26400. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1933. [Class 106 (i)] Casings.-The mechanism of a cash register is supported between a pair of unfinished sheet metal side plates which are held in spaced relation by cross members and wholly covered by an exterior casing formed of a plurality of panels, each panel being removable independently of the other panels to give access to portions of the mechanism. The invention is described as applied to the cash register forming the subject-matter of Specifications 445,540, 447,263, and 449,004 and provided with cash drawer mechanism as described in Specifications 444,246, [Group XXXIV], and 444,247. The machine is mounted on a cashdrawer housing comprising a pair of flanged metal plates 73, 74 spaced apart by a U-shaped member 76 to which they are welded. The plates are provided with central openings filled in by wooden or other fibrous plates 77, 78. A pair of upright side plates 1, Fig. 4, extend upwardly from the drawer housing, being bolted to lugs 79 on the plate 74 and connected together by tubular spacing members. These plates carry the various mechanisms and are enclosed by flanged side panels SOL, SOR screwed to distance pieces extending outwardly from the plates. A rear panel 83 is supported by lugs 86 hooking over studs 87 on the side plates 1, and is screwed at its top end to an arcuate strip 85 also attached to the side plates 1. A front panel 88, slotted to receive the key levers, is supported by hooks 89 and studs 91, hooking over studs 90 and the plate 8, respectively. An upper front panel 92 is formed as a lid hinged by brackets 93 to the side plates 1. The lid is normally held closed by the engagement of a stud 130 thereon by a latch 131 controlled by a lock 134. A memorandum pad is clamped to the outer surface of the lid by a bar 95. A strip 96 fills in the space between the upper edge of the lid and an indicator housing 101, Fig. 2. If no indicators are provided, the housing 101 is replaced by a plate 104, Fig. 4, formed separate from or integral with the rear plate 83. A flat plate 98 is secured to the side plates 1 beneath the lid 92 and is apertured for reading the totalizer and item counters. Control of cash-drawer by hinged lid. As described in Specification 445,691, the raising of lid 92 depresses a link 106 and through a bell-crank 68, releases the cash-drawer 60. Control of keys by hinged lid. The partial or complete raising of lid 92 rocks the keylocking plate 50 clockwise about its pivot 51 to lock the keys by the interposition of lugs 52 on the plate in the paths of pins 53 on the keys. For this purpose, a spring-urged lever 117 bears with one arm 116 against the camshaped edge of a supporting bracket 93 for the lid, and with its other arm 119 against the arcuate upper end 127 of a lever 121. The arrangement is such that upon the movement of the lid from closed position, the lever 117 rocks counterclockwise to the position shown, thus rocking lever 121 clockwise, which movement causes an arm 124 of lever 121 to abut a stud 126 on the locking plate and rock the latter to locking position.
