[Class 34 (i)] [See also Group XXIX] Condensation of water in the pipes of a gas distribution system is prevented by cooling the gas leaving the generating station to a low temperature. The gas may also be dried by passage through a series of drying chambers, a drying agent such as a concentrated solution of calcium chloride being circulated in the opposite direction through the drying chambers, a chamber in which the absorbed water is evaporated, and a cooling chamber. In the apparatus shown the gas issuing from the compressor 31 passes to the delivery pipe 36 through a cooler 32 connected to a cold water main 33 and a drying chamber 35 into which a jet of concentrated cold calcium chloride solution is delivered from a reservoir 41 by a pump 42. The calcium chloride solution passes to a reservoir 37 from which it is delivered 'in a finely divided state into an evaporator 39 which is maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure by a pump 40. From the evaporator 39 the solution drains into the reservoir 41. Some of the solution in the reservoir 41 may be supplied by a pump 43 to the reservoir 37 which may also receive water through a pipe 44. The water vapour generated in the evaporator 39 passes through a large passage 51 to an absorber 45 where it is absorbed by sulphuric acid which is pumped from a reservoir 48 after passage through a cooler 50. The hot diluted acid from the absorber 35 passes to the reservoir 48 or to an escape pipe 46. Fresh concentrated acid is supplied to the reservoir 48 by a pipe 47. The water supplied to the coolers 32, 50 is discharged through a pipe 53. In a modification part of the hot diluted acid from the absorber 45 is returned by a pump to the absorber and the remainder is circulated through a reconcentrating apparatus. In another apparatus the gas is dried by direct contact with sulphuric acid.
