Abstract

446,382. Making electric incandescent lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. June 27, 1935, No. 18449. Convention date, June 30, 1934. [Class 39 (ii)] A device for use in conjunction with a filament-mounting machine is provided with feelers for detecting the presence of a mount which is defective due to the absence of a filament, or to an improperly mounted filament, or the absence of one or more supporting or leading-in wires, or the presence of bent or distorted wires, means being provided for automatically removing a defective mount to prevent further operation thereon. The device is particularly adapted for use with the filamentmounting machine described in Specification 390,807, wherein the mounts 10, Fig. 1, are normally carried along a path 105<1> in carrier heads 11, each head remaining stationary during a cycle of operations of the inspection device located beneath it in the position shown. The inspection device is provided with gripping fingers in holders 13 mounted on an endless chain 63 driven by a sprocket 64 which is actuated by an automatically controlled pawl-and-ratchet, the fingers being adapted to grip the stem tube 12, Fig. 3, during the operation of feeler mechanism comprising three feelers 15-17 mounted on hubs 18-20 on a pin 22 which is mounted on a bracket 23 supported by a vertically movable rod 24. The feelers are formed from lengths of wire with the end portions bent to form rectangular frames 25, 26, the tops of which strike the filament 21 on either side of each of its three supporting wires 27 when the rod 24 is moved upwardly, the legs 29 of the feelers, which carry weights 28, being swung upwardly if the mount is satisfactory. Should the filament be missing, or loose in its supporting wires, or one or more supporting wires be bent or absent, the feelers adjacent thereto will not be rotated, but will be carried upwardly, with the leg 29 thereof hanging vertically above the contact arms 33, 34 of a switch mounted on a bracket 39 at the upper end of an upwardly moving rod 49. The switch arm 33 is mounted on a spring-controlled pivoted lever 37 and normally separated from arm 34, the incidence of one of the feeler legs 29, however, causing the contacts 35, 36 of the switch to be closed and operating solenoids 51, 52, Fig. 1. The solenoid 51 controls the action of a lever 57, Fig. 1, which is swung so that a pin 61 thereon strikes the releasing arm 62 of the head 11 of the mounting machine, causing its jaws to open to release the mount in holder 13. Solenoid 52 operates a lever 74 which controls a lever 77 carrying a pawl 85, so that when lever 74 is turned a pin 76 on lever 77 is engaged within a slot 78. A vertical shaft 65 carrying a sprocket 64 is disposed on a bracket which is movably mounted to dispose the fingers of a holder 13 around the stem of each mount which is indexed into position before the device, this movement also producing a turning of the pawl-lever 77 about the pin 76 in the stationary slot 78, and actuating a ratchet-wheel 87 to turn the shaft 65 to remove the holder 13 carrying the defective mount and index an empty holder into position. The movement of the bracket carrying the shaft 65 is such that normally the pin 76 moves idly within the slot 84.
