Abstract

446,319. Thermometers. CHAPMAN, A. W., 184, Tom Lane, Fulwood, Sheffield. July 20, 1935, No. 20671. [Class 97 (iii)] An aqueous solution, which is relatively stable at ordinary temperatures but undergoes a progressive change in hydrogen ion concentration at higher temperatures, and an indicator which progressively alters in colour as the hydrogen ion concentration varies are contained in a glass or other receptacle and indicate by their change in appearance whether or not a given temperature has been reached or the period during which it has been maintained. The test material may be an aqueous solution of ethylene chlorohydrin with a buffer salt such as disodium hydrogen phosphate or sodium borate to control the rate of variation in ion concentration, the indicating part comprising a mixture of the dyes aniline blue, alizarin red S, brilliant yellow and chloro-phenol red or phenol red. At normal temperatures the indicator is red but when heated becomes brown (if chloro-phenol red is used and orange in the case of phenol red), then yellow, then yellowish green and finally a bright green. A pellet or powder of fusible material may be included in the receptacle.
