[Class 40 (iv)] [See also Group XL] A volume-regulating resistance network comprises an element having a negative temperature coefficient and consisting of a filament of uranium dioxide in vacuo to which a control voltage is applied. Fig. 1 shows the application of the invention to an automatic volume controlling system in which a control frequency is filtered from the output of an amplifier V, rectified and made to control the current through and therefore the value of the resistance of the filament R- which forms an element in a potential divider. Fig. 2 shows a filament of uranium dioxide as a shunt element in a four-terminal network. Several such networks may be employed in tandem. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also arrangements in which a variable element such as an incandescent lamp having a positive temperature coefficient is employed. In one of these, Fig. 2 (Cancelled), an increase in signal strength causes a reduction in the current through the variable element. The others are similar to the arrangements shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except that the fixed and variable elements are transposed as regards the main transmission path. These systems are not included in the Specification as accepted.
