[Class 60] A portable apparatus for grinding the cylinders of internal-combustion engines &c. comprises a base B provided with slots for attachment to a cylinder block C<1>, and carrying also four upright guides G of circular, triangular, &c. section on which is movable a body A carrying an electric motor M. The body is balanced by pneumatic or hydraulic pressure supplied to a tube R<1>, secured to the base B, over which slides a ram R passing through the centre of gravity of the body A and secured to the body; the pressure fluid acts on a piston R<2> on a hollow rod R<3> carried by the ram R, and is supplied from a reservoir, the pressure falling slightly therein as the piston rises, and vice versa. The body A carries a sleeve W<2> in which is eccentrically mounted a spindle W<1> carrying a grinding-wheel W. and the sleeve W<2> is rotated by means of a gear W<3> thereon engaged by a gear W<5> carried by a lever W<6> and driven through worm and bevel gearing and universally jointed parts by the motor M ; the drive may be disconnected by movement of the lever, which also carries a stop to lock the wheel W<3>. The body A is reciprocated on the guides G by a screw F driven through a pinion F<4>, or through pinions F<5>, F<6>, from the wheel W<3>, the pinions being carried by a lever F<3> moved by a lower trip T<2> to reverse the movement of the screw at the lower end of the stroke of the body A and by a trip T<1> to stop the screw at the upper end of the stroke, to allow of gauging the cylinder &c. The spindle W<1> is driven by the motor M, through a pulley P and universal joints P<1> ; the eccentricity of the spindle is adjustable to apply cut.
