Abstract

445,038. Soldering chains. WILKINS & WRIGHT, Ltd., and HEWITT, J. H., Holyhead Road, Handsworth, Birmingham. Oct. 2, 1934, No. 28228. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In soldering or brazing chains of the kind in which some or all of the links consist of looped wire or strip, the chain is conveyed endwise, the links arranged to extend transversely of the feed direction with joints directed outwardly, the joints fed with solder and soldering effected by heat, the arranging, feeding and soldering steps being effected while the chain is in motion. The chain 19 is fed through adjustable guides 18, then through a preheater 32 and then under a soldering burner 30, on a chain conveyer which is traversed by chain and worm gear 29 from a belt or electric motor in a slot in a bench 12. The chain conveyer consists of a pair of spaced chains 14 supporting small platforms 15 arranged in end to end contact. Before the chain reaches the guides the links are manually arranged with the joints of alternate links on opposite sides of the chain, and solder is applied either by hand or automatically. The guides urge adjacent links uniformly into oppositely inclined positions so as to clear the joints and prevent the links from being soldered together. The preheater may consist of a chamber 32 lined with asbestos &c. and heated by the soldering burner, or the chamber may contain a separate burner. The chain is retained in pressure contact with the conveyer by a roller 37 on a weighted or spring- pressed lever. The conveyer, which may be tensioned by a jockey pulley is cooled by air &c. blown through a pipe 39. The chain may be fed by separate conveyers during the solder applying and soldering operations.
