Abstract
<PICT:0443848/III/1> <PICT:0443848/III/2> <PICT:0443848/III/3> <PICT:0443848/III/4> <PICT:0443848/III/5> Solids are treated with liquids and, if desired, also with gases in apparatus comprising a conveying worm rotating in a casing, e.g. a tube, trough, or drum, or alternatively a conveying worm rigidly arranged in a rotating drum, the conveying worm being provided with openings in the sheet of the worm or a space being provided between the worm and the casing. Shovels are provided rigidly connecting the adjacent threads of the worm, the shovels extending to the wall of the casing and, in the interior, terminating short of the inner edge of the sheet of the worm and short of the axis of the worm. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus in which the worm rotates with a drum 9, the solids being introduced at 1 and discharged at 2, liquid being introduced at 3 and withdrawn at 4, and gas being introduced at 5 and withdrawn at an outlet 6. The openings in the sheet of the worm 10 may be perforations 12 as shown in Fig. 3 or notches in the edge of the sheet as shown in Fig. 8. In the form shown in Fig. 6 in which the casing 9 is stationary and the worm 10 is mounted on a shaft 8, a space 12 is left between the worm and the casing. The shovels 11 may be parallel to the axis of the worm, Fig. 3, and arranged either radially or at an angle to the radius, or they may be inclined as shown in Fig. 10 so that in addition to lifting the material they also help to pass it through the apparatus. The shovels 11 in Fig. 8 are in the form of worms having a greater angle of inclination than the conveyer worm, in which case the shovels may also be provided with openings. The apparatus may be used for the simultaneous treatment of substances with oxidizing solutions and oxidizing gases.
