Abstract

[Class 40 (i)] [See also Group XVIII] In a letter-sorting apparatus, the course of a letter is determined by depressing a number of keys in succession, each key marking a combination of leads Z-V, Fig. 1b, to operate a corresponding series of relays in a free group E, determined by the hunting switch DD. These relays operate a chain circuit to mark a switch A which, in combination with a selector switch B operates circuits energizing selected magnets P, Figs. 1b and 3, to set trip members 4 on receptacles 5 in which the letters are conveyed, the destination of the receptacles being determined by the setting of the trip members. According to a modification, the course of a letter is determined by the simultaneous operation, or the operation in any order of the selected group of keys. In this modification, the actuation of the keys marks the bank contacts of a switch A which hunts for the marked contacts and, when stopped, completes the circuits of the selected magnets P.
