Abstract

443,581. Photographic developing machines and processes. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Frankfort-on- Main, Germany. Aug. 30, 1934, No. 24999. Convention date, Sept. 26, 1933. [Class 98 (ii)] The photographic film is passed under a yieldable roller before it enters the first developing tank, so as to form a compensating loop whereby the length of the film in the first developing tank may be varied without any change in the length of the film in the other liquid tanks. The tanks 2 are compartments of a large tank and the film is passed therethrough over idle rollers 17 and toothed drums 7 mounted on a cover plate 5. Before the film enters the tank 2 it is passed under a tensioning roller 13, over a toothed drum 7<1>, under a compensating roller 13a, and over a fixed idle roller 17. The roller 13a is connected to the roller 16 in the developing tank by a band 22 passing over a driving pulley and hand crank 19 so that the length of film in the developing tank can be varied. If the film also comprises a sound track, a heated reservoir 23 containing developer applies the liquid to the sound track by means of a brush or sponge 24 giving a constant development to the sound track. The liquid in the tanks is heated by baths 3, the film being dried in a chamber 18 heated by a current of hot air from a fan coupled to a motor 9. In order to determine the required length of immersion of the loop in the developing liquid for any particular film, the light intensity ratio for the darkest and lightest parts of the scene photographed is determined photometrically during the taking operation, and from previouslydetermined curves showing the relation between development, light intensities, and the blackening of the film, the time of development is obtained. The loop 21 of film is then adjusted by the hand crank 19 to a length corresponding to the required time. In establishing the relation between development and the light intensity ratios, several strips of film are exposed under a grey wedge and developed until the minimum blackening is due to fog. Curves are drawn for a variety of development times.
