[Class 40 (ii)] [See also Groups XX and XXIX] Film-winding mechanism for sound and picture kinematographic apparatus or like sound recording or reproducing apparatus comprises a drive element for connection with the film spool and driving mechanism arranged for driving the spool with a torque proportional to the radius of the roll of film thereon comprising an outer drive element in the form of a casing enclosing an inner drive element, the drive elements having complementary tapered surfaces, and the outer-element being constructed for containing viscous fluid for mechanically coupling it to the inner element without direct coupling engagement of the elements. As shown, a casing 9 is driven by a belt running in a groove 8 thereon and is provided with a bushing 10 running freely on the shaft 11 and has a thrust washer 12. The casing is covered by a member 13 secured thereto by screws 14 and provided with a central aperture closed by a screw-plug 15. The casing 9 has a tapered smooth inner surface and a member 20, keyed on the shaft 11 and retained thereon by a nut 22, has a corresponding tapered smooth outer surface. Oil placed in the casing 9 forms the coupling between the two tapered surfaces. A washer 23 bearing against a shoulder on the shaft 11 supports a spring 24 which forces the member 20 away from the washer 23 firmly into contact with the nut 22. Adjustment of the nut 22 controls the distance between the tapered surfaces. A pulley 16 keyed on the shaft 11 drives the driving belt, which is tensioned by a spring-pressed idler 17.
