Abstract

443,217. Condensers. BEVAN, R. H. L., and HARRIS, G. W., H.M. Signal School, Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth. Aug. 22, 1934, No. 24178. [Class 38 (ii)] In parallel plate condensers, constraints are applied to the plates, so as to control the overlap . of the opposed plates in accordance with a definite relationship to temperature. Thus, the plates A, A1 are held rigidly at one edge while the opposite edges are free to slide in grooves in appropriate holders E, E1. As far as lateral expansion under heat is concerned, the overlap dimensions are constant and the expansion affecting capacity is confined to a direction at right angles, which will compensate wholly for decrease in capacity due to increased separation of plates on expansion of the supports B, B1 under heat if the spacing bars D, D are of negligible expansion. By making these bars of suitable materials or combinations of materials so as to have a positive or negative coefficient of expansion under heat, the capacity-temperature relation of the condenser may be controlled so as to compensate for temperature effects in associated inductances.
