Abstract

442,996. Walls; floors; roofs. JUNKERS, T., [Representative of JUNKERS, H.], 18, Hindenburgstrasse, Gauting, Munich, Germany. July 12, 1935, No. 19954. Convention date, July 13, 1934. [Class 20 (iv)] Hollow structural members such as walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, &c. are built of metallic supporting posts, joists, or rafters, on opposite sides of which metallic sheeting constituting the wall &c. is secured, the sheeting on the side exposed to weather, or cold, being provided with a heat-insulating layer facing the wall &c. cavity and being connected to the supports by means which reduce conduction of heat. The sheeting on the sheltered or warm side has no substantially heat-insulating layer. The outer sheeting 1, Fig. 3, having the heat-insulating layer 6 may be connected to the metal posts 3 by widely spaced sheet-metal strips or bars 4 of considerable length, to reduce conduction of heat and to allow for expansion. The connections 4 may also be of heat-insulating material or may be connected to the sheet or posts through non-conducting lavers. The inner sheet 2 is connected to the posts through thin layers 5. The ceiling, consisting of metal sheeting 12, Fig. 1, is attached to the underside of the metal joist 13 through widely spaced members 15, the flooring sheeting 11 being carried by closely set members 14. The joists 13 are coupled to the metal posts 3 supporting the wall. Apertures 8, 18 may be provided so that air from the apartment 10 may circulate through the wall and ceiling cavities. The posts 3 and joists 13 may be of tubular form, in which case their interiors may communicate through passages with the air in the space 10. The posts may consist of channels 25, Fig. 6, of flared section, cross-braced at 27, the wall consisting of slightly dished metal sheets 21, 22 flanged at 24 to engage in the grooves of the channel members. The sheet 21 is thermally insulated by the layer 29 and non- conducting layers 30 may be provided between the sheets 21 and the channel members. In a modification, posts of C-section are employed and the sheets 22 engage in a flared channelmember secured to one side of the post, the sheets 21 engaging in a similar flared channel connected to the opposite side of the post by sinuous metal strips. A roof may be constructed of braced members 41, 42, Fig. 8, connected to vertical posts 3, slightly dished metal sheeting 44 being connected to the roof member 41 by strips 46. Thermal insulation 48 is provided for the sheeting 44 and a grooved member 49 on the underside of the roof engages over the outer sheet 1 of the walls.
