Abstract
442,958. Preventing fires. DENNISON, KETT, & CO., Ltd., and MOSS, D. J., Kenoval House, Farmer's Road, Camberwell, London. Oct. 22, 1934, No. 30247. [Class 47 (ii)] Relates to roller shutters wherein the operation of a thermal element releases a spring drum which, by its rapid rotation, initiates the automatic closing of the shutter, and consists in arranging that the drum is operatively connected with the shutter only as a result of the rotation of the drum. As shown, the shutter 1 is mounted on a roller 2 rotatable on a spindle 3 under control of a counterbalancing spring 4. Mounted for rotation on an extension of the spindle 3 are a spring drum 7 and a disc 14, the latter carrying a pivot pin 20 to which are fixed a pawl 15 and an arm 22. The pawl co-operates with a ratchet wheel 13 on the roller 2, being held normally from engagement therewith by a spring, and the arm 22 is adapted to be engaged by one of a series of lugs 23 on the drum 7. The drum is held, with its spring wound up, by a cable 10 with a fusible link 12. When the link fails, the drum is rotated by its spring, a lug 23 engages the arm 22 to rock the pawl 15 into engagement with the ratchet wheel, and the roller 2 is driven to uncoil the shutter. In order to prevent operation of the spring drum when the shutter is already lowered, engagement of an arm 24 with the outer surface of the rolled shutter or of the roller is adapted so to control an arm 27 that the latter lies in the path of the lugs 23, so as to prevent rotation of the drum 7, when the shutter is lowered. The pawl 15 might be carried by the drum 7 and controlled by a cam. A suitable lever may be included in the cable 10 to reduce the tension exerted on the link 12 by the spring drum. In a modification, applied to a double shutter with a manual winding gear, a pawl is brought, by centrifugal force upon rotation of the spring drum, into engagement with internal teeth of a gear-wheel in mesh with a pinion on the main winding shaft of the winding mechanism.
