Abstract
442,173. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., 9, Kingsway, and AYNGE, W. E., Glyneva, Sydenham Park Road, Upper Sydenham, both in London, and SCOTT, R. H., 5, Manor Way, Bush Hill Park, Enfield, Middlesex. Oct. 11, 1934, Nos. 29134/34 and 4074/35. [Class 100 (iii)] Magazimes.-In a distributing - mechanism for typographical composing and distributing machines of the kind comprising a plurality of vertically superposed distributers and a plurality of magazine entrances one overlapping another for conducting matrices from the distributers to a corresponding number of magazines, an upper magazine entrance is tiltable rearwardly about a pivot which is located at its rear and above the next lower distributer, and is mounted in a carrier which is itself displaceable rearwardly in relation to a second pivot arranged rearwardly of the magazine entrance pivot. The arrangement permits ready access to the various parts of the machine without necessitating the complete removal of the magazine entrances, and in one modification the magazine entrance 3 is supported by pivoted studs 7 which in the operative position rest in open bearings 8. The studs 7 engage in slots 16 formed in arms 12 pivoted on a shaft 13, so that the upper entrance 3 may be swung about the shaft 13 to the inverted position shown. During this movement, the entrance may be guided by a fixed rail 17 with which engages an eye 20 which may be swivelled to the side block of the entrance or as shown fixed to a plate 21 pivoted to this side block. A lug 23 and pin 24 serve to limit the pivotal movements of the plate 21 and a lug 25 on the fixed distributer bracket 9 forms a stop for the arms 12. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the entrance 3 is provided on each side with guide plates 28, 29, 30, of which the last is formed with a hook-shaped extension in which is engaged a roller 32 carried on an arm 33, freely pivoted about a sleeve 15 and formed with a stop 34 for engaging the bracket 9. The pivot studs 7 of the entrance are normally received in the open bearings 36 and are carried by arms 26 which are linked at 39 to operating levers 27 carried by the sleeve 15. The sleeve is freely rotatable on the shaft 13, about which the entrance 3 moves, so that on pulling down the arms 27, the entrance 3 first moves rearwardly until the guide plate 29 engages the bearing brackets 36, after which it tilts about the studs 7, whereupon the arms 33 are swung rearwardly to a horizontal position fixed by the stops 34. The entrance finally comes to rest in a horizontal position supported by the arms 33 and the guide plates 28 resting on the brackets 36. A further rearward movement may be given to the entrance to permit easy access to the magazine shoot for the lower distributer and this is effected by manually releasing spring- pressed latches 40, which normally form a stop for preventing clockwise movement of the links 26 about the pivots 39 ; upon removing the latches from the path of the links 26 and raising the levers 27, this further rearward movement of the entrance takes place.
