Abstract
440,750. Spray burners. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (Timken Silent Automatic Co. ; 100, Clark Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Sept. 4, 1934, No. 25434. [Class 75 (i)] [See also Group XIII] A method and apparatus for the combustion of liquid fuel shown in Fig. 8 as applied to a converted coal-fired boiler and in Fig. 9 as applied to an oil-fired boiler consists in distributing the fuel in unatomized form on to vaporizing surfaces of special construction arranged adjacent to but spaced from the boiler wall where it is ignited and met by streams of air which sweep over the hearth of the combustion chamber. Oil is supplied by a pipe 5 to the cup 90 of a rotary burner 3 and is delivered through radial tubes 6 in the form of unatomized droplets towards the periphery of the hearth 16. Air for combustion passes through a conical shutter 8 and is delivered towards the periphery of the hearth by fan blades 10. The fuel and air are projected against metal segments 25 clamped end to end to form a continuous combustion ring spaced from the wall of the furnace. Each segment, as shown in Fig. 4, has a gutter 27, an oil impact wall 28 and an air directing wall 29. The segments are connected by clamps 31 formed of sheet metal and consisting of a strip 32 shaped to the contour of the segment 25 and provided with ends 33, 34 engaging upper and lower portions of adjacent segments. A vertical supporting plate 31 is provided with lugs 37, 38 spot welded to the strip 32 and with a flange 40 having a finger 41 adapted to rest on the hearth. Light metal grills of the form shown in Fig. 5 may be supported on the impact walls 28 of the segments 25. Each grill comprises a rectangular structure 47 provided with passages 48 and supporting members 50, 51. In the modification shown in Fig. 9 the fan blades 87 are secured to the dish-shape cover 9a which terminates in a flange 88 below which are the impelling portions 10a of the blades. Apertures 89 are provided adjacent the oil tubes 6. The hearth structure comprises a plate 60, heat-insulating material 63 and a hearth plate 67 supported by U-shape members 65 and provided with a peripheral flange 70 arranged beneath a depending portion 73 of the wall 72. Ignition devices described in Specification 440,751 are associated with the segments 25. U.S.A. Specifications 1,655,016, 1,707,474, 1,856,720, 1,882,694, 1,886,675, 1,888,693, 1,909,007, 1,965,054, and Reissue Serial 17991 are referred to.
