Abstract

440,117. Road-sweeping machines. HOBBS, J. E, and JOHNSTON BROS. (CONTRACTORS), Ltd., 35, Crutched Friars, London. June 20, 1934, Nos. 18301 and 30539. [Class 107] Relates to road-sweeping machines of the kind comprising a main rotary sweeping brush 24 adapted to deliver the refuse to a receptacle 30. According to the invention, one or more auxiliary brushes 13 are provided at one or both sides of the machine, each brush being formed with a number of radial arms 14 and being mounted to rotate about an axis which is inclined transversely of the machine and inwardly towards the road surface. The auxiliary brush, in the construction shown, is driven by a motor 17 through transmission means including gears 19, 20,. a shaft 21, and universal joints 22, 23, and is carried by an arm 15 having a universal joint connection 16 with the vehicle frame 10. The brush is spring- loaded and rotates about an axis which is inclined laterally and longitudinally of the vehicle. The forward end of the arm 15 is connected to the frame 10 by a spring and a chain extending laterally in opposite directions and can be lifted by a cable 40. The main brush 24 is carried by a pivoted sub-frame 25 which can be raised and lowered by a cable 26 and winch 27. The brush delivers to a shoot 28 and on to an endless belt 29 the upper end of which is located above the receptacle 30. A further rotary brush 31 discharges the refuse from the belt to the forward part of the receptacle. In a modification, the main brush delivers the refuse to the lower end of a shoot which extends upwardly to a suction fan which discharges into a receptacle.
