Abstract
439,951. Purifying water; gravityseparation apparatus. WADE, J. R., Memileas, Chandorsford, Hampshire. June 12, 1934, No. 17335. [Class 46] A buoyant structure for collecting liquid from a body of liquid, such as a pond or stream containing suspended matter, comprises a settling-chamber with apertures in the base through which settled matter is returned to the pond or stream. The device may be built o wood and canvas, strutted or weighted to a suitable shape, and supported by floats or lengths of tubing. Liquid enters a chamber B through an inlet I at the downstream end and is drawn off through a flexible or jointed suction pipe O. Settled matter passes through apertures E in the box, which may be provided with non- return valves V, into a lower compartment C, and is carried away by water passing from an inlet W to an outlet S. This discharge of solid may be aided by an ejector J. A coagulant may be supplied to the liquid through perforated pipes D. A screen or net is arranged across the inlet I. The bottom and sides of the chamber B may be provided with riffles R or corrugated, so as to promote settlement or direct the settled matter to the apertures E. Or the bottom of the chamber B may be formed of conical cells or hoppers. Rods, ropes or wires may be suspended in the chamber B for a similar purpose. The device may be without the lower chamber C, a pump or impeller being provided at the inlet I to raise the pressure in the chamber B. The device may be employed as a fore-bay for the collection of water to be subsequently purified in further settling apparatus or filters or to be treated with a sterilizing agent. Plant for such purposes and the necessary pumping plant may be placed on a separate barge or barges or on shore. When a separate barge is used its screw propeller may serve as impeller to cause a flow of water through the lower chamber C. The fore-bay may be partially supported on piles, transoms or stringers. The device may be made in sections of convenient size for transport.
