[Class 59] The internal or external grinding-surface of a roll formed of hard metal strips interlaced with strips or laminations of softer material arranged at right angles to the direction of motion has the strips secured on a dovetail projection on the foundation and by overlapping lugs on the sides. As shown applied to a grinding roller A, Figs. 2, 3, hard metal plates C separated by strips D of softer material are mounted on a central dovetailed portion B and may be secured by wires E or a central band F. The plates C are secured to the roller shell by overlapping rings G. The soft strips D may comprise linen, cotton, wood, paper, leather, celluloid &c. or the hard strips C may be coated with cement, paint, varnish &c. or be electroplated or covered with a deposit of soft metal. The plates C may be case-hardened or if hard plates are used the sides may be annealed or softened.
