Abstract
438,896. Coating with metals. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Indiana Steel & Wire Co. ; Muncie, Indiana, U.S.A.) May 25, 1934, No. 15654. [Class 82 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVI] Ferrous articles, e.g. wires, are given a zinc coating by the hot galvanizing process and are then given a second zinc coating, which is preferably comparatively heavy, by a process which is carried out at a temperature below the melting point of zinc, e.g. by electrodeposition. A ferrous wire 10 is drawn by a winding drum 24 through an annealing furnace 12 and cleaning and fluxing baths 13 and 14 into a bath 15 of molten zinc where it receives the first coat. The wire may then be passed through wipers 16 and may be heat treated for a few minutes in a furnace 30. It is then drawn through a cleaning bath 17 and an electroplating bath 18 where the second coating of zinc is applied, the wire being connected to the source of current by means of trolleys 20. The wire may then be drawn through a washing bath 22 and through or over a drier 23. Batch coating may be used instead of the continuous process. The article has a heavy zinc coating, the outer part of which is of pure metal while the inner part is firmly associated with the base by inter-alloying. Specification 330,040, [Class 41], is referred to.
