Abstract
<PICT:0438410/III/1> A jacketed boiling drum for dehydrating water or water and oil-containing materials by heating the agitated material with a heat transferring agent such as oil or water as described in the parent Specification, is provided with a conveyer screw 18 which is divided longitudinally by a perforated cylindrical screw 19 to form an inner screw and an outer screw. The screw blades are preferably formed of perforated metal and are provided with scrapers 21 to prevent overheating of the material near the jacket 9. Raw material such as comminuted whale flesh or bones, is fed into a pipe 3 and passes into the inner drum in which it is heated and submitted to action of the water or oil admitted from sprinklers mounted on top of the drum 1, and the more finely powdered material passes through the screen into the outer drum. The main quantity of flesh blubber and bones in the inner drum is conveyed together with the screened material to the delivery end of the drum where it is passed by blades 20 and screw 4 into a draining drum 5. Liquid products are discharged through an overflow outlet 10 provided with screens having conical perforations. The drum 5 is provided with a conveyer screw 25 mounted on an axis of triangular section and rotating within a perforated hexagonal drum by which the material is tumbled and rapidly drained. Liquid is discharged through an outlet 29 connected to the liquid overflow outlet 10 mounted on the main drum 1, and the dried material is discharged through a pipe 30. The process may be effected under reduced pressure, and extraction solvents used.
