[Class 68 (i)] Cutter-mounting means for a mining-machine cutter-chain comprises a bit holder held in a block and provided with a forwardly-obliquely disposed bit socket in its outer end and means on the block forming an abutment for the outer end of the bit for securing the bit in the socket. Each cutter-carrying link has a lug 13 with a transverse groove 14 from which extends a socket 15, sockets of successive links being inclined laterally at different angles. Each bit holder 16 has a shank for insertion in the socket 15 and a head 17 lying in the groove 14 and is preferably reversible. Renewable abutment plates 19 may be held at opposite sides of the groove 14 by pins 20 and have grooves 21 with inclined end portions 22, and reinforcing beads 24. A double pointed bit, which may be of diamond section, fits an inclined opening 25 in the holder, part of the outer end of the bit seating in the inclined groove portion 22 while the inner end of the bit rests against a transverse pin 27 in the holder and is clear of the rear abutment plate 19. The holder is secured by an inclined screw 29 bearing on an inclined surface 30 of the holder, while a lip 30<a> cooperates with the screw to limit outward movement of the holder. A modified abutment plate, Fig. 7, has a lug 31 for engagement with a notch in the lug 13. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that shims may be placed behind the abutment plates for adjustment, or interchangeable abutment plates may have different grooves 21, 22, and that each side of the holder shank may have an inclined surface 30. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
