Abstract

435,852. Treating sewage and foul waters gravity-separation apparatus ; filters ; drying-apparatus ; refuse - consuming furnaces. LINDEN, L., 15, Rue Raynouard, Paris. Dec. 22, 1933, No. 36144. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 25, 1934]. [Classes 46 and 111] [See also Groups XII and XIII] Sewage or foul waters are passed successively through vessels 1, 2, Fig. 1, from each of which settled matter passes through a valve 5 to a receiver 4. The vessel 1 is fitted with baffles 3, agitating vanes 8 and air injectors 9. Floating matter in the vessel 2 passes into collectors 12 connected by a conduit 14 with receivers 7. The sludge in each receiver 4, Fig. 2, is treated with reagent supplied from a vessel 15 and agitated by air from injectors 18. On settlement the upper layers of liquid are drawn off through valves 16, 19, and an adjustable siphon 20, and the mud discharged through a valve 23. The lighter material is treated similarly in the vessels 7. Liquid from the separating apparatus described above may be passed to filtering apparatus shown in Fig. 4. The liquid supplied through a funnel 33 flows upward through a layer 32 of pebbles or coarse gravel. It may be treated with a reagent supplied at 42. Settled matter is discharged into a receiver 34. The liquid passes for further filtration through a funnel 35 and upward through beds 32<1> of fine gravel or sand. The filters may be cleansed by a reverse flow of filtered liquid on opening valves 45, 39. In a modification of this filtering apparatus the liquid is passed below the filter beds through vertical passages at the side instead of at the centre of the beds. The beds are successively of greater area and of finer material. Fig. 6 shows a further form of settling apparatus comprising tanks 50, 56, the liquid supplied to the tank 50 passing downward therein in two currents separated by a series of vertical baffles 51. The liquid leaves the tank 56 through a filter 60. Apparatus shown in Fig. 7 is stated to be especially suited for the treatment of fatty residuary water. It comprises settling-tanks 65, 73, heated by water circulated through conduits 86. The liquid under treatment is delivered to the tank 65 down an inclined surface 64 heated by furnaces 63, and diluted with water heated as it passes through tubes 70. The matter settling in the tanks 65, 73 is passed to jacketed receivers 67. Gases from the furnaces 63 pass through chimneys 75 to heat the base of compartments 77, which serve for drying sludge or other refuse, conveyed therein by screws 78 actuated by a windmill 79. The gases may be finally used to treat the liquid in the tanks 65, 73. The dried refuse may be mixed with reagent or other fuel to serve as fuel in the furnaces. Fig. 8 shows a furnace for drying and incinerating sewage sludge or refuse. Vessels 92, 93, each provided with agitators 99, devices 100 for the injection of air and passages 101 for conducting steam and gases to chimneys 94, are superposed over furnaces 97. Refuse partially dried in the vessels 92, passes through valves 102 into the vessels 93, and after further drying therein, falls into the furnaces 97. Air is supplied to the furnaces by pipes 98. The furnace may heat a steam generator 103.
