Abstract

Hydrocarbon oils are cracked and/or hydrogenated by passing them together with hydrogen and oxygen or oxygen-containing gas <PICT:0435809/III/1> mixtures over catalysts the reaction proceeding exothermically and without external heating due to the reaction of the hydrogen with the oxygen in the presence of catalysts promoting oxidation, e.g. vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, palladium, &c. Coke oven gas from a holder g mixed with air in a vessel m is pumped to a reaction vessel a into which it atomizes the oils from a tank o through nozzles b. The materials are cracked and/or hydrogenated in passage through catalysts c maintained at reaction temperature by catalytic combustion of the hydrogen and the products are cooled in a cooler d heavy constituents being condensed and removed to a tank t<1>. The vapours are passed through a high tension apparatus e and a scrubber w from which the condensate is removed to a tank t and partly recirculated as scrubbing agent while the remainder is passed to a separator q in which low boiling constituents are separated by distillation with steam and condensed in a cooler k the condensate being collected in a separator S, where the final product is separated from the water and led to a receiver t<111>.100 parts coke oven gas containing 50 per cent hydrogen are mixed with 120 parts air and the vapours obtained from a heavy paraffin oil and the mixture is led over shavings of electrolytic copper. 28 per cent of the paraffin is converted into light oil which is absorbed in activated carbon. Specification 348,252 is referred to.
