Abstract
Apples, tomatoes, and other fruit are preserved by coating with a thin film of a solution of 1 part by weight of shellac in 6 parts of spirit. The solution may be prepared by dissolving 1 part of shellac in 2 parts of spirit and diluting before use with 4 parts of spirit, a small amount of castor oil being also added. p Beeswax or paraffin oil may be added in small amount to the solution, especially when coating fruit with a rough surface such as oranges and lemons.
