Abstract
435,142. Steam turbines. REAVELL & CO., Ltd., and HUMBY, A. J. D., Ranelagh Works, Ipswich. April 13, 1934, No. 11192. [Class 110 (iii)] Apparatus for controlling and /or measuring the weight of air or gas flowing in a main comprises a regulator A having a diaphragm 5 responsive to differential pressure proportional to the volume of flow across an orifice 1 in the main 2, which diaphragm operates a relay member, such as a pivoted jet pipe 6 supplied with pressure fluid, which regulates the relay pressure in pipes 7 for controlling the speed of a fan or motor, or actuating a valve, and/or indicating the flow. A second differential pressure, proportional to the density of the fluid and obtained by means of a constant speed fan 22 driven by a motor 23 passing a portion of the fluid through an orifice plate, acts upon the diaphragm 26 of a second regulator B which effects compensation of the relay pressure in pipes 7 by adjusting a contact piece 33 between the jet pipe 6 and a pivoted lever 34 in accordance with the density. The diaphragm 5 is balanced by the relay pressure on a diaphragm 9 and the diaphragm 26 is balanced by a piston 28 subjected to pressure from a jet pipe 29. As applied to the control of a blast furnace blower 11 driven by a steam turbine 10 the apparatus further includes another regulator C with a jet pipe 14 actuated through a diaphragm by the relay pressure in the pipes 7 which also actuates a flow indicator 35. This further relay pressure obtained in the pipe 15 acts upon the governor gear 13 through a control cylinder 12 to adjust the turbine speed and hence the quantity of air delivered by the fan to maintain a constant weight of flow. When it is not desired to indicate the quantity of air flowing, the regulator A may be omitted together with the indicator 35, in which case the diaphragm of the regulator B is influenced directly by the differential pressure across the orifice 1, a similar system of adjustment of the jet pipe 14 by the regulator C for the density of the air being provided as for the regulator A. If it is desired to indicate the quantity flowing only, then the regulator B is omitted together with the governor control cylinder 12.
