Abstract

435,115. Pulleys. KODAK, Ltd., Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Lair, E. L. F. C. ; 11<bis>, Place de la Nation, Paris) March 14, 1934, Nos. 8109 and 8110. Convention dates, March 16, 1933 and May 15, 1933. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 15, 1934.] [Class 80 (i)] [See also Groups XVI, IX, XIII, and XXX] In apparatus for supporting or guiding bands, cords, or the like, at least one support is provided comprising a main rotary part or carrier over the outer surface of which the band or the like passes, the outer surface being constituted by a series of rollers each of which rotates bodily with the main part but is individually rotatable thereon, the band passing over the support in a direction inclined to the axis of rotation of the main part, and means being provided whereby as the main part rotates, each roller, while in contact with the band, is moved in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation, so that there is no relative movement between the rollers and the portion of the band in contact therewith, and damage to the band is therefore obviated. The support shown in Fig. 1 comprises a number of hollow or solid spindles C<1> each having its ends journalled in bearings carried in two end plates A<1> secured to a rotary shaft F. Fixed cams G furnished at each end of the support bear against the ends of the spindles which on rotation are moved longitudinally by the cams. Bands E inclined to the axis of rotation of the support pass around the support in contact with the spindles C<1>, the arrangement being such that a spindle in contact with a band moves longitudinally so that no relative movement therebetween is produced. The cams G may be omitted, the bands E moving the spindles in one direction, and mechanical means, such as springs, moving the spindles in the reverse direction. The support may be driven mechanically or by contact with the bands E. In a modification, where a band is wound helically around a support, the spindles are arranged each to move radially out of contact with the band. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 8, where a band is wound helically around a support, two separate groups of spindles C' and C<8> are provided, these spindles being rotatable and radially movable in slots formed in the end plates. The spindles C<8> are cranked at the ends so that the portions of the spindles adapted to contact with the band can extend to the same radius as those of the spindles C'. In this arrangement the spindles C<8> are out of contact with the band when the spindles C<7> are moved into contact. One or more supports may be used as pulleys for cables or endless belts. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also means whereby each spindle on a support positively engages the band or strip. Each spindle may be provided with teeth to engage perforations in the margins of the band, and each tooth may be rotatable relatively to its spindle about a pivot ; or each tooth may be rendered inoperative or withdrawn from the band either by the action of the band itself or by a cam or other device. In a modification, each spindle is hollow and slotted and connected to a suction apparatus, whereby the band is held on the spindles ; means for destroying the suction on the spindles at the position when the band leaves the spindles may be provided. In a further modification, clamps for the band or strip are mounted on each spindle, so that the band is not actually in contact with the spindle. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
