Abstract
435,099. Clutches. McKENZIE, S. B., 47, Grosvenor Street, Toronto, Canada. April 16, 1935, No. 18201. Divided out of 435,148. [Class 80 (ii)] In a bidirectional roller clutch provided with a member which can be moved at will so as to render the clutch unidirectional, a positive force is automatically transmitted from the powerdriven shaft to said member when the said shaft again overtakes the other shaft, so as to return the said member and restore bidirectional running. The clutch comprises oppositelyacting sets of caged rollers l, s, one set l being arranged between cam pockets on a boss c, which is carried on the driving shaft a by a quick-pitch thread i<1>, and the cylindrical inner surface of a flange e on the driven shaft f, and the other set s being arranged between the cylindrical inner surface of a flange d secured to the shaft a and cam pockets on the outer surface of the flange e. A disc w, which is slidable on the shaft f and is connected for rotation with the cage t of the outer set of rollers s by pins y, carries conical projections z adapted to co-operate with conical recesses a<1> in the flange e. With the disc w in the normal position shown in Fig. 1, in which it is held by spring-pressed ball detents g<1>, bidirectional drive is transmitted. If disc w is moved to the left, by a control lever d<1> through a collar c<1>, the projections z co-operate with the recesses a<1> to turn cage t so as to render the rollers s inoperative, and the shaft f can now overrun. During overrunning, boss c moves to the left due to the thread i<1>. Disc w is maintained in its lefthand position by a spring f<1> until shaft a again takes up the drive, whereupon the boss c screws back to its right-hand position and in so doing moves back the disc w, through pins l<1> slidable in the flange e, to its normal position, restoring bidirectional drive. In a modification, the cage t is adapted to be turned through the medium of bell-crank levers pivoted on the flange e and actuated by a conical-ended collar slidable on the shaft f.
