Abstract

434,776. Coaster hubs. FICHTEL & SACHS AKT.-GES., Schweinfurt, Germany. April 25, 1935, No. 12496. Convention date, April 25, 1934. Addition to 420,550. [Class 136 (ii)] A coaster hub having means for locking the driver in the brake - applying position by a coupling- device, in order to avoid continuous back - pedalling, as described in the parent Specification, is provided with a roller locking device adapted to move on ascending tracks in one direction of rotation to lock a surrounding ring by means of which the locking-coupling is closed, the springs which act on the coupling being disposed entirely within the driver. In the form shown, the coupling for locking the driver a consists of a ring-shaped part a<3> fixed to the driver, and an axially-slidable part i<1> on a bar i extending through a transverse slot in the axle b. The parts a<3>, i<1> have coupling teeth with inclined flanks, which are normally held out of engagement by a spring k. A bar g acted on by a spring h slides in a transverse slot in a bearing cone b<1>, and is guided by a pin g<1> in the bore of the axle b. An end cap c is provided with several (e.g. three) internal arcuate projections c<1> formed at their ends which are the leading ones in the backward rotation of the driver with inclined surfaces c<2>, Fig. 3, the other ends forming undercut teeth c<3>. Opposite these projections is a ring d formed with corresponding projections d<1> having inclined surfaces d<2> and undercut teeth d<3>. Within the ring d is a cage e, Fig. 2, (with drag springs e<2>) carrying rollers f, which on back-pedalling move outwards on flats b<2> on the cone b<1> until they enter depressions d<4> in the ring d, which is thus locked against rotation, enabling it to be traversed by the inclined surfaces c<2>, d<2>, to displace the bar g and, through the spring h (which is stronger than the spring k), the bar i, thus closing the locking-coupling i<1>, a<3>. Since the teeth of the coupling are inclined, the braking effect may be varied even after the coupling has been closed. In a modification, the coupling and the parts effecting its engagement are all mounted in the bore in the driver, on the inner side of a ball bearing supporting the driver, the sliding bars being replaced by sliding parts around the axle, which is itself formed with the flats for actuating the locking-rollers.
