Abstract

434,658. Dispensing liquids. LLEWELLYN, J. B., 4, Bonaparte Mansions, Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, London. Feb. 6, 1934, No. 3932. [Class 102 (ii)] [See also Group XV] A device for effecting a removal of the liquid contents of a bottle or container by increments comprises a diaphragm for effecting displacement of a part of the liquid by compression of the air above the liquid content, a well for receiving the displaced liquid and a manually operable actuating device for positively moving the diaphragm in opposite directions. The well 4 is centrally mounted in the diaphragm 6, which is held fluid-tightly to the neck 2 of the bottle by means of a cap 10, which may be screw-threaded to engage a corresponding thread on the neck 2, or may be attached to the neck by turning over the free end of the downwardly-depending portion of the cap. Upon depressing the well 4 and the diaphragm 6, ink or other liquid is forced up the tube 12 into the well 4, and remains therein until the well 4 is raised again, when it flows back into the bottle. A second outer and movable cap 15 screws on to the cap 10 and is formed with a central aperture so that the inner edge of its face engages a recess 19 formed in the well 4. As the cap 15 is suitably rotated, the well and diaphragm are depressed together to fill the well. A valve washer 20 in the well 4 with apertures 21 offset relatively to the inlet tube 12 may be provided to prevent splashing of the liquid ; alternatively, the tube 12 may communicate with an aperture in the side wall of the well 4. The valve washer 20 may act as a stopper by the addition of a suitable plug inserted in the well and adapted to press on the washer. The thread on the cap 15 may be omitted and the necessary movement imparted thereto by such means as an inclined groove and pin connection between the inner and outer cap members, with an offset at the end of the groove to constitute a catch for holding the outer cap in its lower position. In a modification, the diaphragm is fixed to the top of the bottle neck by a non-removable cap, over which slides a larger cap formed with an aperture in which is fitted the upper end of the well. The inner and outer caps are formed with co-operating projections and recesses so that the outer cap and with it the diaphragm and the well may be depressed and locked in the lowered position by rotating the outer cap to engage its circular rim beneath the projections on the inner cap. Alternatively, the inner edge of the aperture in the inner cap may frictionally engage the outer cylindrical surface of the well and thus serve to hold the diaphragm and well in adjusted position. The well and diaphragm may be formed of rubber, or in part of synthetic resin or the like, or the diaphragm may be of rigid material resiliently attached to the well and/or the bottle. The diaphragm may be integral with the well, or if subsequently secured thereto it may be of thin metal resiliently connected to the well. Specification 434,690 is referred to.
