Abstract
434,045. Vehicle bodies. STEEL WHEEL CORPORATION, 1060, The Rookery Building, Chicago, U.S.A. June 23, 1934, No. 18601. Convention date, June 26, 1933. [Class 108 (i)] [See also Group XXXI] A chassis frame structure comprises a transverse bridge or dash integral with a base extending rearwardly therefrom to carry the body and mounted on the rear wheels, and having arms extending forwardly therefrom, between the ends of which the front end of the engine unit is mounted, the rear end of the engine unit being supported by the dash. The base or body supporting part comprises a sheet steel periphery 44 in one piece or sections welded or riveted together at the corners, reinforced by triple channel longitudinal members 46, Fig. 6, and rear transverse tubular members 64, Fig. 1, which may carry rubber cushioned wheel brackets 68 as described in Specification 430,512. A floor 48 supported on the longitudinals 46 is preferably stiffened by wells or depressions 50 providing foot room between the seating sections 52, 54, further reinforcement being provided by radiating &c. grooves or channels 56, 58 which may be filled with wooden strips. The wells may be supported by cross-members 63. In a modification, Fig. 4, (not shown), a flat floor stiffened by radiating grooves and reinforced by a series of tubular cross members, is described. In either case, a bottom sheet or stamping 62, which may also be stiffened by grooves &c., is welded or riveted to the lower flanges of the side members 46. The transverse bridge or dash 20 comprises a main sheet metal stamping 84 welded to or forming an extension of the bottom plate 62, its upper portion forming a cowl 106 stiffened by grooves and supporting the wind shield 114 and instrument board 108. The forward end of the floor sheet 48 is inclined to form the foot rest 82 and is bolted to the dash 84. Under the inclined portion 82, the structure is reinforced by a vertical transverse plate 86 and by V-shaped filling stampings 88 at each side of the centre, the reinforcing members being flanged and bolted or welded &c. to one another and to the plates 82, 62 and 84. Centrally, the dash is formed with a conical portion 100 within which is secured a conical stamping 92 embodying a bearing 94 for the rear end 98 of the engine unit 32, a rubber sleeve being interposed, preferably with vulcanization to both engine boss and bearing. The foot rest 82 is shaped at 102 to seat round the part 100. The forwardly extending arms 22 are of hollow tapered formation comprising inverted channel sections 26 with flanged lower edges welded to flat bottom strips 28, the rear ends being closed by plates 30 welded to flanges by which the arms are bolted to .the dash. At the forward end, the arms are welded to an engine support or bearing 38 aligned with the rear bearing 94 and similarly provided with a rubber bushing. The engine unit 32, mounted in the bearings 38, 94 may be directly connected to the front driving and steering road wheels 36 by articulated half axles 34 in the manner described in Specification 430,512. The hollow arms 22 may be utilized as fuel containers for which purpose they may be connected by a cross tube 42 and provided with filling openings 40.
