Abstract
433,450. Prospecting for minerals &c. MACHTS, L., 90, Weidenhauserstrasse, and REHDER, B., 2, Universitatstrasse, both in Marburg-on-Lahn, Germany. Dec. 11, 1933, No. 34877. Convention date, Nov. 20. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 11, 1934.] [Class 37] In a method of investigating geological structure a detection apparatus having an antenna is moved over a chosen path and is adapted to give substantially continuous indications in the form of oscillograph diagrams and means are provided for recording such indications automatically when desired and for indicating simultaneously the position of the apparatus on the chosen path when such records are being made. In the arrangement shown, a small frame aerial or antenna 4, arranged to be swingable about its axis 5, is connected to a receiving and amplifying apparatus 1. The received signals are led to the control electrodes 10 of a cathode ray tube, the beam 9 from which is directed on a recording band 7 of sensitive material. A record is obtained of the local electric fields produced either by a normal broadcasting station or by a station radiating a given wave-length for the purposes of the investigation, the aerial of the station preferably having a substantially vertical portion. The frame aerial 4 is preferably oscillated during the investigation, giving rise to maxima and minima 12, 12a in the oscillogram 13, Fig. 1a. The angular changes in position of the aerial are preferably recorded on the band 7 by a curve 13b, which may be marked on the band before the latter is actually used if the cyclic displacement of the aerial is predetermined. Marks are also made on the band along a line 13c, to indicate the distance of the receiver from a known starting point in the region under investigation. This may be effected by mechanical interconnection between the transporting means for the apparatus and the drive of the recording band. When the receiving apparatus moves over a fault 18, Fig. 2, or other irregularity in the geological structure, a change in the oscillogram, such as a displacement 13a is produced. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), an open antenna is used. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not restricted to a method using oscillograph apparatus, but claims generally a process and apparatus for the indirect determination of ground and air electrical conditions in which the geology, morphology, stratigraphy and tectonics of the ground are determined by means of any desired geophysical process. The results are stated to be applicable in determining the most suitable sites for grounding lightning conductors or for erecting laboratories, plantations, stables and the like. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
