Abstract

433,321. Conical paper yarn-holders. LOWRY, A. S., Oakwood Mills, Romiley, Cheshire. March 17, 1934, No. 8412. [Class 120 (iii)] Paper cones are made by forming the cone, drying it, placing it upon a conical mandrel and applying an axial force to the mandrel to press the cone firmly thereon, and trimming the base of the cone whilst the application of the force is maintained. The mandrel is preferably revolved so that the tip of the cone is polished, and to facilitate trimming. A formed and dried paper cone C has its small end trimmed and is placed on the mandrel 3 carried by a shaft 4 which is axially displaceable and rotatably driven by a gear 9 splined on to the shaft. The axial displacement may be effected through levers 13, 28 by a piston 23 moved in the cylinder 22 by air or liquid under pressure admitted by the pipe 29. A shoulder 24 in the cylinder forms a positive stop for the piston, and its position determines the limiting position of the mandrel 4 with respect to the die 15, which latter polishes the small end of the rotating cop in known manner. The position of the cylinder 22 may be adjusted by a hand screw 33. Whilst the cone is still being pressed on the die 15, the trimming knife 17 is lowered by lever 21 and the cone trimmed, the object being to ensure uniformity in the size of the finished cone.
