Abstract

432,331. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. AKTIEBOLAGET MASTER-REGULATOR, 43, Karlavõgen, and SALENIUS, C. G. T., 13, Tomtebogatan, both in Stockholm. Nov. 6, 1934, No. 31842. [Class 108 (iii)] In an hydraulic shockabsorber wherein, when a shock occurs, liquid is forced by a piston or vane from a pressure chamber to a discharge chamber through two or more discharge channels, the liquid streams issuing from the channels meet each other in a space sufficiently restricted to cause the streams to be damped prior to entering the discharge chamber. The invention is shown applied to a single - acting, rotary - vane, shock - absorber, the controlling device being mounted in a channel 24 in a movable vane or in a fixed partition 13 separating pressure and discharge chambers 21, 22 respectively. Passages 30, 31 are provided in the wall of the channel 24 and connect the chamber 21 through bevelled passages 32, 33 and a channel 55 in a screw-head 28 with an annular space 29 formed between the screw-head 28 and the bottom of a widened portion 26 of the channel 24, the space 29 communicating through radial channels 36 with an axial channel 35 leading to the chamber 22 and controlled by a non-return ball-valve 28. When pressure occurs in the chamber 21 two streams of liquid are forced each through one of the bevelled passages 32, 33 and flow against each other, thus impeding the flow and increasing the resistance. Additional resistance may be obtained by the insertion in the annular space 29 of a temperatureresponsive, resilient, coiled band 39, for example of brass having a thickness of 0'05 to 0À15 mms. and a height of 2 to 3 mms., and a coefficient of expansion greater than that of the surrounding casing. After the two liquid streams meet they pass together between the coils of the band 39 varying the space between the coils and thus the resistance according to the degree of shock. In modifications (a) the band 39 and the walls of the annular space 29 are conical in shape ; (b) the band is in the form of a screw ; (c) a double-acting controlling device is shown which may be replaced by two oppositelyarranged, single-acting devices.
