Abstract

432,201. Projectiles. NEVITT, J. B., Cottesloe, Featherston Road, Streetly, EWINS, G., 54, Britwell Road, Wylde Green, both near Birmingham, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Jan. 19, 1934, Nos. 2007 and 4331. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to explosive, incendiary, and tracer projectiles having a slow burning time fuze ignited on discharge. According to the invention the time-fuze composition is housed within a compartment separate from the main charge and is so correlated with the partition between it and the main charge that fusion or disruption of the partition does not occur as a direct result of the ignition of the fuze composition, the detonation or melting or ignition of the main charge being effected solely by the heat conducted through the partition. In the projectile shown in Fig. 1, a primer 4 is ignited by the flash of the propellent at the moment of discharge and fires a tracer 3, which also acts as a time fuze. This tracer is in a copper thimble 2 having a recess 7 at its closed end containing a primer 8, covered by a thin lead foil, opposite a passage 11 in line with the cavity 16 in the main explosive charge 9. The inner end, of the thimble 2 is lined with insulation 14 and at the appointed time gets sufficiently hot to ignite the primer 8, which fires the main charge 9, if this has not previously been fired by a percussion fuze 12, 13. In the projectile shown in Fig. 2, a similar time fuze 17, not a tracer, fires a heating charge 26 of blackpowder and carnauba wax for melting a tracer charge of yellow phosphorus 29 in a sealed container provided with a hole 33 in line with an outlet 34, both normally sealed with solder. In another form, the heater 26 is dispensed with, and the container of the time fuze arranged to project into the phosphorus charge. Specifications 127,271 and 127,272, [both in Class 9 (i)], are referred to.
