Abstract

432,110. Extrusion - apparatus for moulding and vulcanizing coverings on cables. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc., 195, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Kemp, A. R.; 170, Lexington Avenue, Westwood, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Jan. 20, 1934, No. 2031. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1933. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVI] Heavy cables are covered with thick layers of very soft rubber compound by extrusion, and the coating vulcanised while the cable is maintained in a vertical position to prevent decentralization. Fig. 1 shows the lay-out of the plant, the cable being drawn from a reel 2 by a winch C through a straightening-device 3, extrusion-apparatus 4, steam-vulcanizing- apparatus 6, sealing-means 7 and water-spray 26, thence passing to a similar apparatus for applying a second coating which may be arranged immediately above the first apparatus or to one side as in the illustrated form. On its way to the extrusion apparatus the cable is coated preliminarily with partly depolymerized heated rubber or the like by being drawn through a tube 16<a> charged with this material. Movement of the tube develops pressure in the material. The main coating is supplied to the die 10 from the hopper 17 by the rollers 18, 19. When applying two layers in succession, the first layer may be partly vulcanized, and the process completed during the vulcanization of the superposed layer. The sealing-means to prevent escape of steam from the vulcanizing- chamber comprises a series of washers 21 which just clear the coated cable and are spaced by rubber washers 20. A typical coating composition is stated to comprise 100 parts crÛpe rubber, 1 part sulphur, 1 part zinc oxide, ¢ part stearic acid, ¢ part diphenyl guanidine, 3 parts aldehyde amine condensation product, 2 parts petrolatum base wax of high melting point and 2 parts phenyl alpha naphthylamine. The process is stated to permit the use of compositions having a minimum amount of sulphur and a maximum of rubber.
