Abstract

Precious metals, or their compounds such as selenides or tellurides, are concentrated from their ores by froth flotation in a pulp containing a small amount of one or more of the sulphides, sulpho-salts, or mixtures of sulphides and sulpho-salts of copper, silver, lead or mercury, formed by coagulating, for example by heating or by slow agitation, very finely divided or colloidal particles of the sulphide or sulpho salt. The term sulpho-salt is used to denote a double compound of the metal with sulphur and with arsenic or antimony. The active sulphide may be prepared by treating a dilute solution of a soluble salt of the metal with a soluble sulphide or with sulphuretted hydrogen, and then subjecting the resultant suspension to heating or slow agitation to coagulate the colloidal part of the precipitate, the mixture added to the pulp containing coagulated sulphide and small particles of crystalline sulphide. Alternatively naturally occurring sulphides such as galenite or argentite may be ground to a very fine state of division and then treated to coagulate the colloidal particles. The active sulphide, which is stated to link up with the precious metal or ore to form aggregates which are easily floated, may be added to the pulp before or during flotation, or after a period of preliminary flotation. Examples are given of the concentration of the precious metal in a pyritic gold ore and in an ore free from pyrites. In the case of the pyritic ore, a first flotation is carried out in an alkaline pulp containing sodium cyanide to depress the pyrites, active lead sulphide being added to link up with the free gold and xanthate and aerofloat or cresol being used as flotation agents. A concentrate rich in gold is obtained and is cleaned. Copper sulphate is then added to neutralize the sodium cyanide and a second flotation is carried out to produce a concentrate containing pyrites and some gold. More active sulphide is then added and a further flotation carried out to give a lead sulphide concentrate poor in gold which is used as an active sulphide reagent in treatment of a fresh batch of ore.
