Abstract

431,664. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO., 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 20, 1934, No. 24015. Convention date, May 22. [Class 130] In sealing mechanism for continuous-rod cigarette-making machines in which an endless sealing belt 24 is heated by contact with an electrically-heated shoe 38 and in which both the sealing belt and heating shoe are supported by a frame 13 movable to carry the sealing belt into and out of contact with the seam of a cigarette rod C, said belt and shoe are so arranged that they are automatically separated when the supporting frame is moved away from the cigarette rod. The frame 13 is mounted on a stationary shaft 12 which is carried by an adjustable vertical slide 7 on the machine bed and which supports a bevel wheel 14 driven by a sprocket 16 connected to the main drive of the machine by a chain 17. The bevel wheel 14 meshes with a bevel wheel 27 on one end of a shaft 26 which rotates in bearings on the frame 13, the other end of the shaft 26 carrying one 25 of two pulleys supporting the sealing belt. The second or idler pulley 23 is located on a shaft 22 which is mounted on an arm 21 pivoted at 20 on a bracket 19, and the latter is pivoted at 18 on the frame 13. The shaft 22 is provided with a cam follower 54, and a stationary cam rail 56 is located on the shaft 12. This arrangement is such that, when the frame 13 is swung about the shaft 12 by a handle 51 to lift the sealing belt away from the cigarette rod, the cam follower 54 will coact with the cam rail 56 and swing the arm 21 about its pivot 20, with the result that the pulley 23 is moved sufficiently toward the pulley 25 to slacken the sealing belt and enable it to move away from the heater shoe. A spring 33 is interposed between the arm 21 of the idler pulley 23 and the frame 13 which is adapted normally to press yieldingly the pulley 23 away from the pulley 25 to take up the slack in the sealing belt due to expansion thereof when heated, and spring-pressed pressure rollers 36 are provided for retaining the sealing belt on said pulleys. The cigarette rod C is propelled through the sealing mechanism, in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, that is to the left, by an endless rodforming tape 43 driven by a tape wheel 44, the tape wheel 44 and pulleys 23, 25 being driven in the same direction of rotation, namely anti-clockwise, so that the lower run of the sealing belt travels in a direction opposite to that of the cigarette rod.
