Abstract

Nuclear a -a -g -g -tetramethylbutyl substitution products of polyhydric phenols and ethers thereof are manufactured by condensing a polyhydric phenol having at least one nuclear position o- or pto a hydroxyl group available for substitution, or ethers thereof, with at least one molar equivalent of diisobutylene in the presence of a kationoid condensing agent, e.g. acids or acidic salts, such as sulphuric acid, sodium bisulphite, phosphoric acid, monosodium phosphate, zinc chloride, aluminium chloride, boron trifluoride, benzenesulphonic acid, toluenesulphonic acid, hydrochloric acid and sodium acid sulphate. The products can be used as disinfectants and insecticides. The polyhydric phenols and ethers employed may be substituted by halogen or sulphonic, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, nitro, carboxylic or azo groups. In examples, diisobutylene is reacted in the presence of sulphuric acid with: (1) resorcinol; (2) catechol; (3) hydroquinone; (4) pyrogallol; (5) guaiacol. In examples (1) to (4) the reaction is effected in solution in glacial acetic acid, which may be replaced by sulphuric acid itself, higher fatty acids, e.g. propionic acid, or alkyl sulphates, or mixtures of solvents. In (5) no solvent is employed. Specifications 398,218 and 415,715 are referred to.
