Abstract

430,017. Protective arrangements. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN SOC. ANON., Rue de Monestier-de Clermont, Grenoble, IsÛre, France. Dec. 8, 1933, No. 34559. Convention date, Dec. 9, 1932. [Class 38 (iv)] A device for protecting transmission lines and apparatus connected thereto against steep fronted voltage surges comprises a plurality of conductors each connected to the line at one end and insulated from earth at the other. A large part of the surge is diverted from the transmission line by these conductors and divides among the conductors which, having different characteristics, cause the divided parts of the diverted surge to return to the line in succession after reflection at the ends of the conductors. The surge impedance of the arrangement of conductors is smaller than that of the main transmission line which may have an impedance arranged in series on the live side of the diverter when the transmission line is connected to a transformer or machine to be protected. Inductance coils may be connected in series with the line on both sides of the diverter which may be combined with a lightning arrester. The conductors may comprise coils 1, which may be made of magnetic material such as iron wire, wound on insulating cylinders 5 which may be of resin treated paper or impregnated cardboard and each of which has a metal lining 6 to which the lower ends of the corresponding coil is connected. The coil assembly is carried on metal base 3 supported by insulators 4 and is enclosed by an insulating casing 2, connection being made to the line through terminal 10, cap 9 and collar 8. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the combination of the apparatus with a lightning arrester is effected by connecting all the free ends of the branch conductors to one side of a spark gap the other side of which is connected to earth through a resistance. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
