Abstract

429,927. Wrapping-machines. LOWE, R. G., 11, Charnwood Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire. Dec. 4, 1933, No. 34087. [Class 94 (i)] Packets of powders and the like are formed by perforating a strip of cardboard or like material which is closed at the top and bottom by sheet material, the strip being severed at intervals to form the individual packets. The sheet material is provided with an extension by means of which the packet may be opened. As shown in Fig. 2, a strip 10 of cardboard &c. is advanced to a position at which an aperture 51 is punched therein, and a web of paper 41 is adhered to the bottom. A block 100 is formed by severance between the apertures, and the cavity is filled with powder &c. Finally a strip 81 is applied to the top and is severed between the blocks, a margin 96 being allowed to project to form a tab to facilitate removal. The punch 14, Fig. 3, is operated by an arm 15 pivoted at 16 and returned to the inoperative position by a spring 17. The strip is fed forward in guides 12 by a crank-operated connecting rod 31, Fig. 4, carrying a feed plate 32 on which are mounted arms 33, 34 the ends 35, 36 of which are formed to engage the front walls of apertures during a forward stroke, and to ride over the transverse partitions during the return stroke. The web 41 of paper, which is coated with thermo-plastic adhesive, is applied to the underside of the strip 10 to close the lower mouth of each cavity, and is drawn from the reel over an electrically-heated iron to soften the adhesive, an intermittently operated pressure ensuring adhesion. Alternatively, gum may be applied to the strip 10 or to the web 41. The strip is now severed between the apertures to form a series of rectangular cases which are propelled through a filling station comprising a horizontal cylindrical filling drum 65, Fig. 7. The drum is continuously rotated to raise the powder by means of vanes 69, and to cause it to fall into the apertures 51. A scraper 70 removes the excess and a closure strip 81 is applied in a manner similar to that employed for the strip 41. The strip 81 is sufficiently wide to allow an unsecured marginal portion 96 to project for use as a tab to facilitate removal. The strip is severed between the packets to separate them. In a modified form of packet, the covering strip may be the same width as the strip 10, and an excess is applied to form loops at the points of severance, thereby forming tabs at the ends of the blocks.
