Abstract
429,792. Testing paints &c. DIGBY, W. P., 6, Queen Anne's Gate, Westminster, KING, F. A., and KELVIN, BOTTOMLEY, & BAIRD, Ltd., 18, Cambridge Street, Glasgow. Feb. 9, 1934, Nos. 4326 and 17731. [Class 97 (i)] The rate of change of colour, or loss of hiding power, of paint varnish, dye, &c., is determined by subjecting an article to which the paint &c., is applied to the action of ultra-violet light and liquid alternately and/or simultaneously, for predetermined periods of time, with or without intervening rest periods. Figs. 1 and 2 show a cell in which the coated &c. article is inserted for testing, consisting of a metal box 1 lined with insulating material and having a window 3 transparent to ultraviolet light. A metal plate 8 coated with the paint &c., is inserted in guides 7 and is provided with a terminal 9. A number of graphite rods 4 connected by clamps 5 and provided with a terminal 6 are also inserted in the cell. Liquid inlet, outlet, and overflow connections 10, 11, 12 are provided so that an electrolyte such as tap water, sea water, &c., can be admitted to or drained from the cell as desired. The rods 4 and plate 8 with the liquid form a voltaic couple, so that a voltmeter connected to the terminals 6, 9 gives a reading which depends on the condition of the layer and can be plotted against time to enable the rate of loss of hiding power &c., to be determined. A number of cells may be arranged round a source of ultra-violet radiation, such as an arc lamp, a selector switch being provided so that any cell can be connected to the measuring instrument. An annular tank containing liquid surrounds the cells and is connected to the several cells by piping.
