Abstract

429,766. Flexible tubes. SCHNABEL, E., 4, Zimmerstrasse, Lichterfelde, Berlin. Dec. 6, 1933, No. 34332. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1932. [Class 99 (ii)] [See also Group XXVI] Flexible tubes &c., with relatively stiff self-supporting walls for use in conveying organic solvents, dilute acids, &c., are made by working up into tubular form polyvinyl derivatives, e.g. polyvinylalcohol, either alone or together with other substances. The tubes may be formed by extrusion or by dipping, glycerine or like softening agents or filling material such as asbestos preferably being added to the polyvinyl alcohol, and a fabric covering may be applied to the tubes before setting. Alternatively the tubes are hardened by treatment with formalin or by the application of heat, then covered with an impregnated fabric, and finally reinforced by braided wire &c. Tubes may also be formed from woven fabric &c., which has been impregnated with the polyvinyl derivative, or from ordinary hoses by applying thereto a layer of the derivative on fabric or by working the derivative into the material of the hose. Tubes made as described may be covered with rubber or a rubber tube which is itself covered with the derivative, a mixture of latex and the derivative being injected between the various layers and the completed tubes finally vulcanized. The invention is also applicable to the manufacture of packing sleeves and washers. Specification 386,161, [Group IV], is referred to.
