Abstract

428,012. Casting composite articles. MORIN, L. H., 215, East 149th Street, and MARINSKY, D., 1515, Grand Concourse, both in Bronx, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 3, 1934, No. 25340. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1933. [Class 83 (i)] Casting - machines; moulds.-In the production of die castings on a mounting strip, as for example in the manufacture of sliding clasp fastener strips, automatic apparatus employed therein involves the use of a pressure fed nozzle, separating die parts and a core element, which serves for feeding and stripping. Part of the mounting member, which is the usual fibrous strip, is positioned between the dies during the casting operation. A trimming tool removes the runner to form a finished element during the operation of the machine. The casting pot and nozzle are heated electrically and the dies are water cooled. The spacing of the fastening elements into groups may be automatic. As shown, a nozzle 28 is urged by the action of a spring 23b against the dies when in working position and is fed by a gooseneck channel 25b from a port 25<c> leading into the interior of the container 25 for the molten metal. A plunger 34 is operated by a cam actuated rocker arm 35<a> to force the metal through the nozzle to the dies and remove same therefrom after an injection to prevent clogging of the nozzle and channels. The pot is electrically heated by means of circuits 32a, 32b which may be provided with switches 41b and a pyrometer 41a. The dies are water cooled to assist speed of operation of the machine and means is also provided for insulating and/or cooling parts of the apparatus, e.g. the casing 24 containing the pot 25 is mounted on rollers which may be supported on water cooled tubular pins. After the injection of a charge of metal into the dies they are opened as indicated in Fig. 10 by cam operated slide bars, the last formed fastening element 43 being still in contact with the core 45 as shown in Fig. 9. Thereupon the core moves downwardly dragging with it the cast element 43 and the mounting strip, the element as soon as the dies partly close being trapped by the lower side 29d of the dies for stripping the core which moves upwardly alone and the dies are opened. The core feeds and spaces the strip for the production of each casting of a series but a separate feed is arranged for spacing each series with respect to the next series, Fig. 15 showing a strip with group castings having a space between the mounting strip 44 being cut between the series to allow of sufficient material for the end parts facilitating attachment to the articles for which the stringers are employed.
