Abstract

427,739. Railway-vehicle. under-carriages. PIRON, E. H., 210, Highland Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Oct. 21, 1933, No. 29246. Convention date, April 17. [Class 103 (vi)] The body of a railway vehicle is supported upon the truck frame by means of a springing system having a constant load-deflection ratio, or, equivalently, a constant period of vertical oscillation. This requirement is fulfilled when w /#w/wx is constant, w representing the load and x the deflection, and the necessary adjustment of the springs is effected experimentally, rubber springs acting partially in shear being preferably employed. In the construction shown the truck frame comprises side girders 3, and cross-beams 4 supporting a short longitudinally disposed member 18, while the body is supported by a centre bearing member 7 supported within the member 18, and by side-bearings 8 on the side girders 3. The centre bearing comprises a tubular pin 7 depending from the body bolster 12 and mounted by means of a ball joint 24, 25 within a sleeve 17, a helical spring 9 being located within the pin 7 between the vehicle body and base 19 of the sleeve 17. Interposed between vertical plates 26, 27, one of which is united to the sleeve 17 and the other to the member 18, is a rubber cushion 28 adapted to be compressed between the plates and also to be stressed in shear under the loading. Each side-bearing comprises a U-shaped load-transmitting plate 29, Fig. 4, carried by the body and between which and outer plates 30 carried by the side girders 3 are disposed rubber cushions 32 and intermediate plates 31. Crossed links 33, 34, prevent undue separation of the plates owing to the loading. At their upper ends the plates 29 are formed as brackets 37 on the arms of which are rollers 39 working on a curved track 38 concentric with the centre bearing 7. The several plates 26, 27 and 29-31 are engaged with the rubber cushions by a frictional engagement sufficing to prevent slipping and thereby to dispense with the use of any bonding material.
