Abstract

426,840. Shaping paper containers. THURSTON, A. P., 329, High Holborn, London.-(Herz Cup Co. ; 840, East 134th Street, New York, U.S.A.) April 4, 1934, No. 10263. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] Containers such as drinking-cups, made from blanks of paper or like material, are provided with an integral reinforcing rim by turning the material of the upper portion of the side walls of the container upon itself by a series of folding or creasing operations so as to form three or more edge-connected layers and subsequently highly compressing the layers. The blanks, which may be cut out in the machine or fed from a stack of blanks, are first corrugated or pleated, then passed to the folding apparatus, and finally are operated on by the compressing apparatus. The corrugating apparatus comprises a grooved die 50, Fig. 4, mounted in a blank-receiving ring 51, and above it a plate 55 reciprocated vertically by levers 59 engaging rods 56 thereon and carrying tongues 63 adapted to engage the grooves at the outer edge of the die 50, so as to initiate the formation of the corrugations in the blanks. A ribbed die 65 co-operates with the die 50 to form the blank into a cup shape and also complete the corrugations, the ribs being more inclined on one side than on the other so that the corrugations all lie in one direction. The movement of the die 65 is stopped before the full mating position is reached, and the die 50 is then given a slight rotation by an arm 69, Fig. 6, (not shown), engaging a pin 68 thereon, thus fixing the setting of the corrugations. A ribbed plunger 76, movable in the upper die 65 pushes the cupped and corrugated blank through a restricted orifice 75 and delivers it to one of a series of cup-shaped dies 95, Fig. 8, mounted on a shaft 97, which is then rotated until the cup-holding die is horizontal. In this position a die 98 reciprocating on a fixed support 100, co-operates with the die 95 to press the side walls of the cup. A plunger 103 slightly raised above the level of the die 95 co-operates with the end of the die 98 and with a plunger 130 resiliently mounted within the die 98 to form a raised bottom on the cup. Surrounding the dies 95, 98 are sleeves 101, 102 and 147, 148, 149 respectively, reciprocated independently of one another. To the outer end of the sleeve 149 is fixed a flanged ring 177 on the face of which are slidably mounted a number of overlapping plates 150 movable radially similarly to an iris diaphragm by rollers 179 engaging cam slots in an annular plate 182 oscillated by lever mechanisms 186 .. 189. The sleeves and the plates 150 co-operate to form the rim of the cup into the shape shown in Fig. 19 with the incipient folds a ... d, and the sequence of operations being shown in Figs. 12 ... 18 (not shown). The die 95 is now moved into a vertical position and the cup ejected by the plunger 103 so that it drops on to one of a series of dies 192, Fig. 10, forming part of the compressing apparatus. The plunger 103 is normally held retracted by a projection 106<a> on an arm 106 engaging a pin 104 thereon, the arm being operated to release the plunger at the requisite moment. The cup is carried by the die 192 into a horizontal position opposite a horizontally-reciprocated die 195 having mounted thereon a spring-pressed die 200 and a spring-pressed plunger 202. A sleeve 213 reciprocated by levers 215, is mounted on the outside of the die 192, and a plunger 220 normally held retracted by a pin 214 thereon engaging a cam ring 223, is mounted inside the die 192. In operation, after the dies 192, 200, Fig. 19, come into engagement, the ring 213 is first moved into engagement with the die 195, and then the dies 192, 195 and the ring are moved to complete the folds along the lines a ... d and compress the rim into its final form. To deliver the completed cup, the die 192 is turned through 180‹, in which position the cam 223 releases the plunger 220 which ejects the cup. An oscillating arm engages the rear end of the cup and pushes it into nesting relationship with the previously-formed cups. Feeding sheets.-The blanks are fed to the machine from an inclined stack from the bottom of which they are separated one by one by an oscillating suction device. A gripper-device 22, Fig. 4, mounted on a reciprocating carriage 25 carries the blank a certain distance towards the machine, and at the same a pivoted finger 24<a> engages behind the previously-fed blank to push it forward into the machine, the feed being completed by oscillating rods 37 engaging behind the blank. A tongue 42 carried at one end by an oscillating lever and moving over a supporting roller 43 supports and prevents sagging of the blank, the tongue being withdrawn before the dies begin to operate.
